Practice Album Cover

We were set a task to create a practice album cover by following the instructions from Pete's blog.

Pete's Task

Make your own album cover

If you are making an album cover as part of an A level task, you need some practice. One of my favourite tasks, which proves that anyone can be creative, is this one, also known as the internet CD cover meme creator, to be found in various locations on the web. Here's what you do:

1. Get a band name:
Use the title of a randomly-generated Wikipedia article. You HAVE to use the title of the page you land upon!

2. Get an album title:
Use the last four or five words from the last quote on this page of random quotations

3. Get your image:
Use the random images  generator from Flickr's last seven days you HAVE to use the third image, whatever it is

4. Drop image and words into Photoshop:
Adjust your band name and album title by changing the font, colour and size and maybe putting a bit of layer effect on. Resize your image so that it is the right size for the front of an album. If you want, you can turn colour into black and white, but you can’t add anything else to the image!

5. Upload it to one of the random generated CD cover sites

1. Band Name

2. Album Title

3. Album Cover

4. Edit All Together

Here is my final edit of my practice album cover. I think it looks really good and I enjoyed creating it! I can't wait to start creating my own album cover for the digipack.

Our inspirations

We found this video on youtube and we all agreed that we want our music video to look very similar to this short clip of boxing. I love the shots used and I think as a group we should try to attempt some of these shots for our own music video.

Plan

Our plan for the upcoming weeks is to complete our storyboards and write out our full idea with details. We then plan to start filming our scenes!

A little bit about our music video

Our whole idea came from developing our previous ideas for the 'fun' 'spoof' kind of music video. We decided we wanted to use superheroes however we have now focused our music video mainly on superheroes. Our choice of music 'Save The World' by Swedish House Mafia goes very well with the narrative of our video. We are currently creating our storyboards which will fully explain our narrative.

Mood Boards!

Permission

I have attached a picture showing the email sent from my group to Polydor Records asking for permission to use the song by Swedish House Mafia 'Save The World'. We explained that we would be using the song for our A2 music video. Explaining also that it would not be sold on and being used solely for educational purposes. We have sent this email to avoid any kind of copyright issues.

Final Idea (I promise!!!)

After lots and lots of discussions as a group and speaking to our potential audience, we have decided to use the idea of being superheroes. We believe that this idea and our song choice will really amuse the audience! We are still going for a funny, energetic music video however, this idea allows us to have more of a narrative for the audience to follow. This idea also allows us to use plenty of different shots and will challenge us in the editing!

Our chosen song:

Our chosen song, we all believe will suit our idea extremely well. It allows us to hit peaks in our narrative and to also add humour!

The Lyrics:
Into the streets
We’re coming down
We never sleep
Never get tired
Through urban fields
And suburban lights

Turn the crowd up now
We’ll never back down
Shoot down the skyline
Watch it on primetime
Turn up the love now
Listen up now, turn up the love

Who’s gonna save the world tonight?
Who’s gonna bring it back to life?
We’re gonna make it, you and I
We’re gonna save the world tonight

It’s far from home,
It’s for the better
What we dream, it’s all that matters
We’re on our way, united

Turn the crowd up now
We’ll never back down
Shoot down the skyline
Watch it on primetime
Turn up the love now
Listen up now, turn up the love

Who’s gonna save the world tonight,
Who’s gonna bring it back to life
We’re gonna make it, you and I,
We’re gonna save the world tonight.

Who’s gonna save
Who’s gonna bring
We’re gonna make it, you and I,
Who’s gonna save
Who’s gonna bring
We’re gonna save the world tonight

Lyrics

Lyrics
Metro Station- Shake It

I'll take you home if you don't leave me at the front door (leave me at the front door)

Your body's cold, but girl we're getting so warm
And I was thinking of ways that I could get inside (get inside)
Tonight you're falling in love (let me go now)
This feeling's tearing me up (here we go now)

Now if she does it like this, will you do it like that?
Now if she touches like this, will you touch her right back?
Now if she moves like this, will you move her like that? (Come on)

Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it

Your lips tremble but your eyes are in a straight stare (straight stare)
We're on the bed but your clothes are laying right there
And I was thinking of places that I could hide (I could hide)
Tonight you're falling in love (let me go now)
This feelings tearing me up (here we go now)

Now if she does it like this, will you do it like that?
Now if she touches like this, will you touch her right back?
Now if she moves like this, will you move her like that? (Come on)

Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it

I saw you dancing and I couldn't get you off my mind
(I could tell that you could tell that I was takin' my time)
I was thinking of ways that you would stay and be mine
(Your body's shaking, turn me on, so I can turn off the lights)

Now if she does it like this, will you do it like that?
Now if she touches like this, will you touch her right back?
Now if she moves like this, will you move her like that? (Come on)

Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it

Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it
Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake, uh shake it

The Idea's

The Three Idea's

Idea 1:
Our first idea was a song called 'Heavy Cross' by Gossip. Our idea was to have a chase story of a boy and a girl. The boy bumps into the girl by accident, she fails to acknowledge him however he falls deeply in lust. He then decides to chase after this girl in hope to get her number! He is desperate and she is leading him on, playing the 'bitch' role. After a lot of chasing, he finally catches up with the girl only to find out that she is actually with a girl and is not interested in him. This was to add a bit of humour to our video.

Pros:
1) There would be a good narrative to the song, making it easier to arrange shots.
2) Our locations can be pretty much anywhere! Making our filming schedule a lot easier for us all!
3) It is light-hearted and fun.

Cons:
1) The whole chase may become boring for the audience as there would only be a peak at the end of the video.
2) We would need to rely on a male role and this may cause difficulties with the filming schedule.
3) Our group don't feel passionate enough about this idea so we may not dedicate ourselves to it as much as we would like to.

Idea 2:
Our second idea is a song 'Shake It Out' by Florence and The Machine. Our idea for this music video was to have a fairytale storyline. We were going to use Little Red Riding Hood with a modern twist to it. We planned to have the idea of the wolf, the grandma and the woodsman. The wolf symbolizes the evil trying to attack Red, the grandma being the safety for red and the woodsman trying to attempt to help Red fight off the evil with good. Red is to be an innocent girl on travels but the evils of everyday life are trying to get into Red's head. Hallucinations would be involved to add the evil effects. The good would then be keeping Red sane and in control of her thoughts. When Red thinks the evil is about to get her, she begins to panic and her life becomes in danger. She then finds comfort and safety where she escapes the evil.

Pros:1) The narrative is very interesting and I think the audience would really enjoy the ups and downs included in the storyline.
2) The scenery would be much more 'magical' and it would include a lot of fun.
3) We would be able to really experiment with our editing and filming skills.

Cons:1) The audience may not be able to understand the influence of Little Red Riding Hood.
2) The audience could mistake the fairytale as a story about a mentally ill person/person on drugs.
3) It will be very difficult to make the video look good and not cliche.

Idea 3:
Our final idea is to take the song 'Shake It' by Metro Station and do a parody type video. We would be using different shots to show different scenes of us 'having fun'.

Pros:
1) We would really enjoy making this music video! We all feel that this idea suits us the best and we would be able to do the most with it!
2) This idea will allow us to really test our editing and we can experiment a lot with different shots!
3) It is light hearted and fun which will be easy to watch!

Cons:
1) It may come across as cliche and the audience may not find the video funny
2) There is no narrative so the audience may not enjoy the video
3) It will take a lot of time to edit our shots which may mean shortening our filming time

"Star" Research Project

Rihanna

I have decided to carry out my research on American pop star Rihanna, I have chosen to do so as Rihanna is a massive world wide star and also has made a lot of changes to her appearance and approach to the music industry throughout the years.

Rihanna's first album 'Music of the Sun' was released August 2005 by record company 'Def Jam Recordings'. Rihanna was signed my mega rap artist and producer Jay-Z. After her first Album, Rihanna's career took off. She began with two hit singles 'Pon de replay' and 'SOS'. Rihanna attracted a young female fan-base.

Rihanna's third album 'Good Girl Gone Bad' was released in 2007 and then again in 2008 with three new songs. This album include chart topping songs such as 'Umbrella', 'Don't Stop The Music' and 'Take A Bow'. Her new album was a major breakthrough that brought her to a widespread prominence. The album won the award for best selling album in the US to date. Along with Rihanna's new album there was a 'new look' to her. Her hair had been cut shorter and she was no longer seen as the 'fresh, young, sweet' singer. She now had a more 'fierce and sexual' look to her. This attracted a different audience, teenagers, boy and girl through to young adults.

Rihanna released her fourth album 'Rated R' in 2009. Rihanna was now girlfriend of RnB upcoming artist Chris Brown. They seemed to help each others career with the use of publicity on their relationship. Rihanna then followed with three more albums 'Loud' (2010) 'Talk That Talk' (2011) and 'Unapologetic' (2012) in which she released many hit number ones such as 'Rude Boy' and 'What's My Name'. By this point in Rihanna's career she had made some huge changes to her whole image. Her songs became a lot more sexually based and her 'look' became more focused on her body. This seemed to help her career, gaining more fans and publicity. Rihanna became a fashion icon (now has her own clothing line for retail shop River Island).

Rihanna has been compared to other artists such as Beyonce and J-Lo however she has now become so big that artists such as Rita Ora has been compared to Rihanna. Rihanna has named Madonna to be her idol and biggest influence. Rihanna seems to present herself as a sexual object to gain popularity. Her fan base continues to grow massively. Rihanna has also been associated with the 'illuminati' and has actually been named the 'illuminati princess'. This allows Rihanna to 'do what she wants' as her excuse is now the devils work.

Rihanna advertising herself in sexualised way allows a buzz to be given to the public. Shocking people and therefore creating more articles and press coverage. Live performances can cause a huge uproar within the public. Social networking sights go crazy with comments and opinions on the chosen clothes and dancing.

There have been many articles written about Rihanna and the way she portrays herself. She has been criticized massively in the media by many different reporters. Here is an example of Rihanna being slated and also the reply.

Lengthy: Rihanna certainly didn't hold back in her criticism of the journalist

Rihanna's look has changed drastically throughout the years and this is due to the advisers. If Rihanna has been advised to show off her body more, sing songs about sex and it has been gaining her more fans, then what does this show about the music industry?
